Shadow of the Tomb Raider slyly announced

"Square-Enix is excited to share some big news with you next year", reads the statement on Twitter. It confirmed what most of us already knew - a new Tomb Raider game is on the way. In 2018, there will be a "major event" that will lead to details being unveiled about the upcoming title.

That said, it's been rumored for quite some time that the name of the next Tomb Raider game will be Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The move is part of an effort to "put fans first", as they await the official reveal of what they call Lara's "defining adventure". The game didn't do great sales-wise on the platform, but things picked up once it released on PC and PlayStation 4.

It sounds like a Batman: Arkham Oranges situation, where a Montreal-based team takes charge of a third installment while the franchise's main developer gets a little more time to focus on their next project. No official title, release date, or much else was given other than the news that the game is actually in development.

The film will debut in theaters on March 16, 2018. It's unclear when exactly Square-Enix will hold this "major" event.

Back in January, it was announced that Rhianna Pratchett-lead writer for both Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider-would no longer be working on the series.

Square Enix's next Tomb Raider game has yet to be confirmed for launch on any platforms, and does not now have a release date.
