A news conference is planned for Thursday in Knoxville to introduce Pruitt, who replaces Butch Jones. He also had a previous stint at Alabama where he served as the Crimson Tide's secondary coach from 2010-12.

In the last few days, Fulmer reached out to a number of potential coaches and interviewed several candidates, including Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, SMU head coach Chad Morris and Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

Pruitt, a career-long defensive coach, has been on three national championship coaching staffs in the past seven years. And a school that managed to play football for 120 years before suffering its first eight-loss season deserved better from its administrators. This will be Pruitt's first head coaching job as he looks to replace Butch Jones who was sacked on November 12 after going 34-27 over five seasons.

Looks like new Tennessee Head Coach Jeremy Pruitt isn't wasting any time.

While at Florida State, his defense was first in the nation in scoring, allowing just 10.7 points per game.

According to multiple reports, Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt is expected to be named the Tennessee coach on Thursday, and that could have a domino effect at Georgia.

A two-time all-state defense back at Plainview High School, Pruitt played college ball at Middle Tennessee State and Alabama in the mid 90s. Following a successful run with the Tide that included two national championships, Florida State hired Pruitt away in 2013 and they claimed the national title.

Pruitt's success this season is particularly impressive given how hard Alabama's defense has been hit by injuries.

Everything, if you believe high school coaching legend Rush Propst, who's now coaching one of the nation's best outside linebacker prospects in J.J. Peterson at Colquitt County (Ga.) High School.

Tennessee was close to hiring Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano in late November, but the deal fell through because of backlash from fans and supporters.

With the early signing period now less than two weeks away, it would seem at least somewhat important that Fulmer hires someone as soon as possible.

Pruitt was also a recent finalist for the Mississippi State head coaching position, but the Bulldogs hired Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead on November 28.
