Flu Shot Numbers Show Increase Over Last Year: Haggie

Over the past seven days, the Public Health Agency said there has been a significant increase in people attending GP surgeries with flu-like symptoms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that only 2 out of every 5 people in the USA gets a flu vaccine each year.

They said there were 60 deaths previous year.

"Those in at-risk groups, may be more susceptible to serious illness and you should contact your GP earlier if you have a high temperature or shortness of breath for advice".

"It is too early for us to know what the flu vaccine effectiveness is for the USA, and we can't make predictions based on what happened in other countries like Australia because it's not an equal comparison", she said. "Most of these can be self-treated without the need for a visit to the doctor, and with no need for an antibiotic".

Oklahoma health officials say 22 people have died from the flu in the state this season, and more than 1,000 people have been hospitalized.

Flu is now considered widespread across Minnesota, the highest level of severity. It estimates that 1.6 million Californians are sick right now, a dramatic 64% uptick from the data it gathered during last year's flu season.

Haggie says the flu vaccine is provided by the federal government, so there's really nothing the province can do to help with the effectiveness of the vaccine.

The Georgia Department of Public Health has reported 4 flu-related deaths in the state this flu season, one of those in Middle Georgia.

State health officials sought Thursday to head off reports suggesting this year's flu vaccine formula has limited effectiveness.

Flu vaccines are available at the health department and at many healthcare providers, urgent care facilities and pharmacies. "If you're not better in 72 to 96 hours, then see someone because there is a chance of developing pneumonia and other complications".

ACMC still has an adequate amount of vaccine for established patients who haven't had their annual flu shot yet.

The agency says people should wash their hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes and stay home from work and away from public places if they are ill.

"If you're a healthy, working adult with no chronic health problems, most of the time you can take something for the symptoms and do just fine", said Beach.

Masks have popped up at the entrances to area hospitals and clinics, and patients and visitors are being urged to put on a mask before seeing someone who may be vulnerable.

"Influenza is not the common cold, it's the fever, the headache, the muscle ache, cough".

A total of 456 patients have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed flu between August 27, 2017, and January 6.
