This Bloomberg Profile looks into how Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos grew his business after builting it inside his garage. Most of Bezos' wealth comes from his Amazon holdings, tying his net worth to market fluctuations. That eclipses the record previously held by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who is now in second place with a net worth of $93.3 billion.
The latest jump has pushed Bezos's fortune definitively above the high reached by Microsoft Corp.'s Bill Gates in 1999. The company's shares are up 7 per cent in 2018, after soaring 56 per cent in 2017.
He moved back ahead of Gates in November when he first crossed the $100 billion net worth mark, as Amazon stock performed very well during the holiday period. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $148 billion today.
According to a Bloomberg analysis, Gates' publicly disclosed donations show he has donated 700 million shares of Microsoft, worth $61.8 billion at today's value, along with $2.9 billion in cash. Shares of Amazon rose by 1.4 percent Monday, adding about $1.4 billion to Bezo's net worth, CNN reported.
Although Bezos' wealth is the largest overall figure, it does not compare to famously wealthy individuals in the past.
