A 16-year-old boy is in police custody after four people were found shot to death inside his parents' New Jersey home.

Fifteen minutes before the arrival of the year 2018, shots fired at a home in northeastern USA state of New Jersey, leaving four people dead and a 16-year-old boy in jail.

Gramiccioni says police responded to a 911 call of shots fired at a Long Branch residence just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Because of the seriousness of the offense, the youth could be prosecuted as an adult, but no decision on that had been made Monday.

The 16-year-old killed his father Steven Kologi, 44, mother Linda Kologi, 42, sister Brittany Kologi, 18, and family friend, Mary Schultz, 70, of Ocean Township, Gramiccioni said. All died at the scene.

They added that the suspect's grandfather and brother were not targeted in the attack and left the home unharmed. There was no history of domestic violence calls to the home, according prosecutors. Grammiccioni says officials don't know of a motive for the killings.

A neighbor said he heard gunshots and fireworks from two different locations in the neighborhood nearly simultaneously.

The suspect, who has not been named, was arrested without incident, the statement said. He's expected to make a court appearance on January 2.
