Unlike other major gaming tournaments that are sometimes unclear of where you should head to watch things unfold online, the Overwatch League is making it easy for you to find the right stream every time.
Twitch will be the third-party provider for everything from the regular season, through the playoffs and championship games and will broadcast in English, Korean, and French.
The Overwatch League is set to launch on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at the Blizzard Arena in Burbank, Calif. The partnership also brings with it exclusive Overwatch League items in the game itself for some of the most die-hard viewers. The city-based league will pull together teams from all over the globe and have them duke it out to see who is truly the best Overwatch team in the world. "Given Overwatch's consistent reign as a top viewed game by our community, we look forward to offering their pioneering style of league play to a large and passionate fanbase that will be able to bond over not only their favorite plays, but hometown pride".
With that kind of money on the line, you can be sure that the teams from Los Angeles (two teams, actually), Boston, Dallas, Florida, Houston, London, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seoul, and Shanghai will give it their all, and fans won't want to miss a single minute of it. The venue was custom-renovated for Blizzard Entertainment esports events and is housing all matches while local franchises get their own venues prepped for eSports.
According to SportsBusiness, no such deal was in place as of January 3, which has "complicated" sponsorships for the League.
Every player who logs into the game before Ferbruary 9 will receive 100 League Tokens, enabling them to acquire one skin for free. Activision Blizzard will simulcast six games per week on MLG, the Twitch competitor that it acquired for a reported $46 million in 2016.
Perhaps with Overwatch as the new marquee title, distribution trumped acquisition. Weekly schedules are displayed in the new Overwatch League tab in-game. Now we'll see how far it can go.
