A plethora of recruits chose to announce their college decisions in late 2017, but a few held out to think about their decision for a bit longer.
Alabama continued its run of reeling in multiple 5-star prospects today when top-rated cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. verbally announced his intention to sign with the Crimson Tide during a National Signing Day ceremony from his high school. Surtain has always been a fan of former LSU cornerback great Patrick Peterson, who was the fifth pick of the 2011 NFL Draft by Phoenix.
Surtain's father is Patrick Surtain, a former three-sport star at Edna Karr in New Orleans in the 1990s who won state championships in football and basketball while also running track. However, Alabama squeaked in as the No. 4 seed and promptly took care of business in the semifinal with a commanding victory over reigning champion Clemson to get back on the final stage for the third consecutive season. "LSU's history as DBU, and Surtain has family in Louisiana". Surtain is ranked the No. 6 overall recruit in the class by 247Sports' Composite Rankings.
In fact, the Tide's 18-member signing class ranked behind several program it has competed against in recent years, including sixth-place Clemson, No. 5 Penn State, No. 4 Southern Cal, No. 3 Texas and runner-up Ohio State. Foster is choosing between Alabama, LSU, Florida State and Texas A&M.
While securing two much-needed defensive backs, including Surtain Jr. and promising three-star Louisiana product Eddie Smith, and three-star SC linebacker Jaylen Moody were important, it didn't do much to appease fans disappointed in losing its team recruiting title for the first time this decade.
After LSU landed one of its worst recruiting classes since 2000, coach Ed Orgeron held a press conference to discuss the class.
The quarterback from Centennial High School in Corona, California, is considering Alabama, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M and Washington.
LSU can only sign 25, according to the new NCAA scholarship signing class limits, and it inked 21 back in the early signing period from December 20-22.
