Weather service forecasters warn of heavy snow, reduced visibility and hard travel conditions, including during the morning commute Friday. Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility and very slick roads.
The first part of a narrow band of heavy snow arrived Thursday night at the United States' third largest city by population. More than 800 Friday flights were canceled to and from the two cities. Wind chill values may drop down to -5° at times early Thursday morning.
By dawn Friday, heavy snow is expected to be falling in metro Detroit, with a couple inches on the ground during the morning rush hour.
"Given the sharp gradient, small changes in the storm track would result in drastically different snowfall amounts for a given location", the Weather Service said. Snowfall should taper off by Friday evening.
Precision 18 Radar picked up on light snow showers during the morning commute. Since 1884, Chicago has had only nine days with 12-plus inches of snow.
Metra announced the BNSF railway will use an alternative snow schedule on Friday.
The warning is in effect for Elkhart, La Porte, Lagrange, St. Joseph and Steuben counties in IN from 8 p.m. Thursday until 11 p.m. Friday.
