The Kerala police on Thursday arrested six people, including a Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) leader, after a pregnant woman lost her baby after they allegedly kicked her in the stomach on January 28. A local leader of the state's ruling CPM has also been arrested, say reports. She also has a five-year-old son.
"We had filed a complaint regarding the land dispute earlier with the police and the police had warned them against any unruly behaviour". However, the Kodencheri Police have arrested seven men in connection to this case and they will be produced before the court today. Reports say that the 28-year-old woman had called the police and asked for help about 15 minutes before the assault took place. She reportedly said that she spoke up in the fight when two men started assaulting her husband. On the day of the incident, a person named Syedhalavi and a few others went to their house and said that they had a problem with her husband, Siby Chacko Thenumkuzhy, she said, adding that she had immediately alerted the police. The accused allegedly kicked in the stomach of the pregnant lady who then had to undergo an abortion. According to the woman, an activist threatened to chop off her husband's legs.
The incident came to light after Josna and her husband sat on a dharna in front of the Kodancherry police station on Wednesday, demanding an action against the criminals. The CPM has denied that it is connected to the incident in any way.
