What makes Jets an appealing option for Kirk Cousins

So much for assumptions and the ideal scenario. And this, particularly with so many teams in need of a signal-caller this offseason, shakes up what we think will happen in the 2018 NFL Draft.

After his name initially popped up as part of the haul the Chiefs would receive in exchange for Smith, Fuller took to Twitter to say he was not part of the deal. ESPN reported the compensation back to Kansas City as a 2018 third-round draft pick and young cornerback Kendall Fuller. "No", Cousins said on PFT Live, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

As for Cleveland's interest in Smith, the quarterback didn't seem particularly open to joining the Browns. That means the Chiefs may use some of that cap space on a veteran backup quarterback behind Mahomes.

It's expected that the trade agreement between the Chiefs and Redskins will be finalized on Wednesday.

On the surface, teams wanting to trade for Smith makes sense, given there are many heading into the offseason with uncertainty at quarterback.

Consider: In 12 career games against Oakland, Smith is 10-2. Kirk Cousins is all but officially done in Washington.

All eyes will now turn to the future of Kirk Cousins over the coming months as a host of teams queue up for the services of a man who has passed 4000 yards for the past three seasons. Among those discussed are Denver, Buffalo, the Jets, Arizona and Minnesota. The Browns finished 0-16.

Cousins made it clear in interviews here on radio row Tuesday that he wants to play for a victor.

Another option would be to sign more of a bridge quarterback such as an AJ McCarron of the Bengals, and hope he could win until the rookie is ready. And at 29 years of age, he is the prime age for a big free agent contract with the stats he will bring to the bargaining table. This move may look like a bold risk on the surface, but the decision to close the door on the Smith era has come at an appropriate time. There might also be a surprise. Smith played his last five seasons in Kansas City, accumulating a 50-26 record during that time.

There will be no shortage of quarterback-needy teams salivating over signing him as soon as free agency begins.

Overall, it wasn't a very symmetrical trade, but the Washington Redskins will survive moving forward. USA Today proclaimed the Redskins got "fleeced", while the Arrowhead Pride website declared of Fuller: "How could the Redskins trade this guy?"

According to Eric Galko of Optimum Scouting, his sources privy to the situation expect Cousins to sign with the Broncos.
