Cruz, O'Rourke advance to US Senate matchup

"The early vote numbers were quite good for Democrats, but at the end of the night, I was very gratified to win over 85 percent of the vote, to win 1.3 million votes, which is more than double what my Democratic opponent got".

Close to one and-a-half million Republicans turned out, which is a near record for the GOP. The brightest star on the ballot for Democrats, Senate challenger Beto O'Rourke, revealed weak spots after letting two primary rivals take 38 per cent of the vote.

The Democratic turnout in a deep-red state like Texas will be studied for whether it's a sign of nationwide momentum for the left since Trump's election in 2016.

Democrats dream of turning Texas into a blue state, thereby cementing the far left's hold on America for the foreseeable future.

Trump's support appeared to help a couple of statewide Republican officeholders.

"When you net the results, there are hundreds of thousands more voting in the Republican primary than the Democratic primary, so we absolutely have our work cut out for us", O'Rourke said by phone Wednesday.

A tide of anti-Trump activism helped propel almost 50 women to run for Congress in Texas and more than half of them won nominations or advanced to runoffs. Of the almost 50 women running for Congress in Texas, more than half won their primaries outright or advanced to runoffs. She advances to a runoff in May with Houston attorney Liz Fletcher.

Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia won their primary elections outright.

"I think a lot of Texans are wondering who it is that Ted Cruz represents in the Senate".

Republicans rejected a well-funded woman candidate who had been a major party donor and endorsed by Gov. Greg Abbott.

"He was an unknown, and he is well-known now", said JoAnn Fleming, a Texas activist who headed tea party organizing for Cruz's presidential campaign. But Cruz still has more money overall, with a campaign war chest worth $7.3 million compared to O'Rourke's $4.6 million. O'Rourke has refused donations from outside political groups and called for banning AR-15-style assault rifles in wake of last month's mass shooting at a Florida high school that killed 17 people.

Despite all that, Cruz remains the race's prohibitive favorite. It defines O'Rourke as a liberal who favors open borders and wants to take your guns.

"Left-wing rage may raise a bunch of money from people online, but I don't believe it reflects the views of a majority of Texans", Cruz said.
