Jimmy Kimmel responded to President Donald Trump's criticism of the Oscars host on Tuesday night, using a portion of his show's opening monologue to lambast the president for being "the lowest president in history" and taking a swipe at his alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels. According to data released by Nielsen, a record low 26.5 million people watched its telecast, a almost 20 percent drop from a year ago, nytimes.com reported.
Trump's big post-Oscars tweet came on Tuesday morning after ratings for this year's show indicated viewership was at an all time low, something Trump gleefully pointed out before saying that the "Problem is, we don't have any stars anymore - except your president (just kidding, of course)!". Trump, in response, had tweeted, "Lowest rated Oscars in HISTORY".
He continued, "But Trump thinks he caused the ratings to go down".
He said, "The truth is, every year since Netflix happened, the ratings are down for every big TV event: the Super Bowl, the Grammys, the Emmys, the Golden Globes". In January of a year ago, as president-elect, Trump called Meryl Streep "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood", after Streep criticized Trump in a speech at the Golden Globes.
Then the coup de grace: "I really think he'd love the best picture victor, The Shape of Water". As Kimmel said, it's about "a monster that has sex with a woman who can't talk about it".
Jimmy Kimmel aimed so many barbs at President Donald Trump during Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony, you would think he'd want a bit of a break from that activity.
"Basically, it's like his life's story", he joked of Trump.
