Kansas City Royals veteran catcher Salvador Perez will miss the opening month of baseball due to a torn MCL in his left knee. For now, look for Drew Butera to handle primary catching duties for the Royals until Perez is healthy.

The moves created space for the Royals to select the contracts of right-hander Blaine Boyer and infielder Ryan Goins, and recall catcher Cam Gallagher from Triple-A Omaha.

All-Star C Salvador Perez will miss the first 4-6 weeks of the season after slipping and falling while carrying his luggage last night.

"I feel sad because I put a lot of work in for this year, and I want to be there".

Perez is a five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove victor.

His injury leaves the team deprived of one of their top hitters Thursday when they open against the White Sox. In 2017, he slashed at.268/.297/.495 and set career highs with 27 home runs and 80 RBI.

It's a tough start to the season for Perez who was hoping for a big bounce back in 2018.

He appeared in 16 games and hit.350 with six homers and 40 RBIs in only 40 at-bats during the Cactus League schedule.
