Instant Pot recalled for fire hazard: popular cooking device can melt

Double Insight's Gem 65 8-in-1 model multicookers, a multifunctional, programmable cooking appliance, which includes the functions of roasting, baking, stewing, slow cooking, rice cooking, searing/sautéing, steaming and food warming.

A manufacturer is recalling a multi-cooker sold exclusively at Walmart stores due to concerns that the unit may overheat.

An instant pot made by Double Insight is being recalled because it poses a fire hazard. No injuries were reported. The CPSC says a defect in the manufacturing can cause it to overheat and melt on the underside. Around 104,000 cookers are included in the recall.

This follows a warning from the company for customers to stop using the multicooker after 107 complaints of overheating, five resulting in property damage. Instant Pot has set up a website,, to help consumers determine whether or not their own cookers are affected.

The company warned consumers about the problem last week, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an official recall Thursday. "If you have an Instant Pot, you should check the number on the bottom of the pot to see if yours has been recalled", says Wallace.
