Democrat Megan Barry, the 54-year-old mayor of Nashville , Tennessee, had been fighting for her political life since admitting in January to the two-year extramarital affair with the chief of her personal security detail.
In a statement, Barry said while her time as "mayor concludes today", her "unwavering love and honest affection for this wonderful city and its great people shall never come to an end".
Meanwhile, Barry is the subject of an investigation from a special committee of the Metro Council that is reviewing whether she misused public money during the affair.
Following the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury case looking into the affair and related financial crimes, Forrest pleaded guilty Tuesday to criminal theft of property over $10,000 and was given three years of unsupervised probation. "She's known for her accessibility and remarkable visibility", Garrison said last month.
A onetime symbol of integrity, Megan Barry made history as the Music City's first female mayor in 2015.
The affidavit also said the TBI has found 260 deleted chats between Forrest's phone and Barry's phone number as well as 35 deleted call logs. Barry repeatedly has denied that their romantic interactions took place while Forrest was on the clock. In July, the couple's only son, Max, died due to a drug overdose, catapulting the mayor to become a national voice in the fight against opioids.
Barry said the affair began in spring 2016 and refused to say when the affair ended, just that it had. Those travel expenses may have reached about $30,000 in 2017, and Forrest received additional overtime pay during that period. She admitted to stealing thousands of dollars while carrying on her affair with Forrest, though the details of how she stole the money is now unknown.
Prior to the affair, Barry was considered a rising progressive star in Nashville where she had approval ratings around 70 percent. But on Tuesday she said her time in office has concluded.
"While my time today as your mayor concludes, my unwavering love and honest affection for this wonderful city and its great people will never come to an end", Barry said on Tuesday shortly after a court appearance. A lot of questions were raised among them being whether Sgt. Forrest's six-figure overtime pay over the three years was justified.
The Mayor's office issued a statement that Barry would be giving a statement at 10 a.m. News 4 will broadcast this statement and stream here.
