Only Harry Redknapp and Steve Wigley have a worse points-per-game record among Southampton managers in the Premier League than 46-year-old former Argentina defender Pellegrino.

"To win, is great; we were strong enough to control the game, now it is to the next game and we have to be strong for that one as well".

A statement from the club read: 'Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has parted company with First Team Manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Additionally, the club revealed that assistants Carlos Compagnucci and Xavier Tamarit have also left the PL side.

Since taking over at St. Mary's Stadium in June 2017, Pellegrino has won just eight matches with Southampton, slightly above 23 percent of the games he has coached.

Newcastle United enjoyed a big afternoon in their quest for Premier League survival on Saturday when they saw off Southampton 3-0 at St James' Park, and their fans were quick to praise one man for a wonderful performance.

Pellegrino admitted as much himself after the Newcastle defeat, saying: "I observed some players who gave up and we can not show this, to be honest".

"I think, at the moment, we have to make sure we enjoy him while he's here". We have been talking about this a lot of time from the beginning.

Asked if he was confident about staying up, manager Benitez said: "Yes, the one thing we have is confidence in our team". We've had a few good results, we need to continue to work hard, do what we have been doing.

Despite their constant changing of managers, Southampton have not finished below 14th in the table in their last five seasons.
