Incidents of the toppling of statues have been reported from certain parts of the nation.

In Tamil Nadu, Unidentified miscreants poured paint on the idol of Dr. BR Ambedkar in Tiruvottiyur, Chennai last night.

Senior police sources have told NDTV that they do not suspect any political motive behind the attack on Gandhi's statue.

Gandhi's bust near the Thaliparamba taluk office was found defaced in the morning with its spectacle carving damaged and a garland on it seen lying nearby. The police conducted investigations on the basis of CCTV footage near the taluk office and arrested the culprit. MHA has taken serious notes of such incidents of vandalism.

The incident comes to light despite a stern warning by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh against such acts. The Home Ministry on Wednesday issued an advisory to states asking them to take all necessary precautions to prevent such incidents.

Reacting to vandalism with SP Mookerjee's statue, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the act and assured that the statue would be restored.

There have been numerous incidents of statues being vandalised in various parts of the country. It started with the demolition of a statue of Vladimir Lenin with the help of a bulldozer in Tripura after Left Front's debacle in the state Assembly elections.
