Balance of NY Legislature could change following special election

Let's start in the 10th Assembly District in Huntington, where former Suffolk County lawmaker Steve Stern, a Democrat, defeated Republican attorney Janet Smitelli by 18 percentage points. The race was one of two special elections for vacated state Senate seats. Steve Farley, a leading Democrat in the governor's race. And there were races to fill nine state Assembly seats.

Republicans are warning Democrats that it won't be easy to take over the NY state Senate, a chamber the GOP has controlled for most of the last 80 years. Cuomo had campaigned for Mayer, and showed up at her party Tuesday night, as heard in this audio captured by

Assemblyman Dov. Hikind (D-Brooklyn), a pal of Felder's, said Cuomo's letter was an attempt to deflect criticism from his left flank that he hasn't done enough to unite Democrats. "And what I do know again is that we are building momentum". We chose to put the pressure on. A much narrower majority of Democrats (56%) agree.

However, it appears the slim Democratic majority is in numbers alone.

Cuomo said Democratic control of the Senate was needed to enact needed legislation such as the Child Victim's Act, gun safety measures and campaign finance reforms. In the Senate, term limits will leave roughly three-quarters of the seats open in 2018. She was the GOP nominee who challenged Latimer in 2016.

"And I just want to congratulate Assemblywoman Mayer on being our next state senator".

But with New York State Sen. Killian's platform included working to make the state more affordable and retain residents.

"I am voting no for those reasons", Schumer said. Delivering the power and weight of NYS, the 11th largest economy in the world and a global symbol of America's culture and diversity, would be a resounding national victory - not to mention a stinging referendum against Trump, whose hometown brand is inescapably tied to NY. There's a lot of great things about Westchester.

Meet the Republican candidate: "As the People's Politician and a Rational (not a Trump) Republican, it is my duty to serve, represent, and empower the people of the Bronx by building a better and safer South Bronx where together we can thrive as a community and get our share of resources in New York", Delices, a former educator has said.

Both Arizona and Nevada are considered key states for Democrats if they hope to take control of the Senate. With this momentum, Schwartz has managed to outraise his Republican opponent Phillips, despite her incumbent advantage and 88% of her contributions coming from corporations.

New York State Republicans who fear a blue wave in November found new reasons to worry in the results of Tuesday's special elections.

Akshar says that would be detrimental for Upstate New York, and especially the Southern Tier.

"And I think it speaks to the sort of challenge facing Republicans and the fact that they really don't have a plan for this other than to look inward at the agenda they push, which focuses exclusively on hurting middle-class families". A Democratic legislature, with a compliant governor, will move toward "fully funding" traditional public schools by raising taxes and ending support for charter schools.
