The tragic death of Corporal Cole serves as reminder of the enormous debt we owe to all who work in law enforcement for the sacrifices they make every day, and the risks they take on our behalf to keep our communities safe. "Our thoughts are also with all of Maine's law enforcement community as they mourn the loss of their colleague, and we pray for their continued safety".

Maine State Police consider him to be armed and unsafe and a nationwide alert has been issued.

Cole has a son who also is a Somerset County deputy. "The suspect should be considered armed and risky".

The five-foot, six-inch suspect has blue eyes with brown hair that's shaved on the sides and in a ponytail on top.

John Williams, 29, is accused of fatally shooting a sheriff's corporal in the early hours of April 25 before using the deputy's cruiser to rob a convenience store.

John Williams is now believed to be on foot and extremely unsafe, having ditched the police vehicle.

Police are asking anyone who sees Williams not to approach him but to call 911 immediately.

He was arrested last month in Haverhill, Mass., when he drove his vehicle into a ditch alongside Interstate 495, according to reports.

ME authorities are searching for a man they say fatally shot a sheriff's deputy, stole his cruiser and robbed a convenience store. Williams was found with a gun, and without a driver's license, according to police. He was charged with carrying a firearm illegally, improper storage of a firearm, possession of a large capacity firearm, unattended ammunition and driving violations.

As the search for Williams continues, Cote says police are already preparing for what will happen once Williams is apprehended.

During a press conference, a spokesman for the Somerset County Sheriff's Office described Cole as an "outstanding employee" and "one of the finest deputies you'd ever want to meet".

It had been nearly 30 years since a police officer was fatally shot in ME while in the line of duty.

After killing Cole, the suspect drove Cole's "fully marked cruiser" to a nearby Cumberland Farms, where he robbed it, before fleeing in the cruiser, police said.
