The Spurs will be facing the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs this season after falling to seventh in the wild west, and with Steph Curry most likely sitting out the entire first round with a knee injury, many think the Spurs have a chance against the defending champs. Last offseason, Durant took nearly $10 million less than what he could have earned on a max salary which allowed Golden State to resign role players like Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.

After the Warriors were blown out by the Utah Jazz 119-79 on Tuesday in their final game of the season, Durant discussed the team's rough sledding to finish.

After winning his first championship, Durant turned down a $27.7 million player option to become an unrestricted free agent with the intention of re-signing with the Warriors for $10 million less.

Durant will turn 30 before the start of the 2018-19 campaign, but he continues to play at an MVP-caliber level during his second year in Golden State. ESPN's Chris Haynes has reported Durant will restructure his deal with Golden State this offseason. Meanwhile, Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green were all also felled by multi-game and/or multi-week ailments in March, while others like Patrick McCaw and Andre Iguodala have yet to play in April thanks to injuries of their own.

"Financially, obviously, what I wanted to do a year ago, it made sense", Durant told the Athletic in March.

The Toronto Raptors earned the top seed in the East this season after posting a 59-23 record.

Durant can sign another two-year deal with an option for even more money, a four-year max contract of roughly $158 million, or a three-year deal with an option, according to ESPN. "But I'm enjoying every moment of it, so I'm not trying to look too far down the line", Durant said. In 68 games, he is averaging 26.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game.

The reigning NBA Finals MVP won his first title with Warriors previous year.
