Giants select Saquon Barkley 2nd overall in National Football League draft

All of a sudden, winning the NFC East for the second year in a row just became a lot more hard for the Eagles when looking at all of the hype surrounding Barkley entering his first National Football League season.

And with the Giants tabbing Barkley over one of the quarterbacks available, they have put their confidence in Manning - and perhaps eventually Davis Webb - to keep them from entering the "Quarterback Hell" Gettleman has spoken so often about avoiding. Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott had 1,631 rushing yards in 2016, and Kareem Hunt finished with 1,327 rushing yards in 2017. "Saquon Barkley is a transformational back".

The Giants finally have their generational running back. They also own the fourth choice and can grab one of those three after taking a quarterback to start proceedings.

Over the past two years in Happy Valley, Barkley rushed for over 2,700 yards and added another 1,100 receiving with 43 combined touchdowns, numbers that the Giants will be hoping can translate to the NFL.

Less than an hour before the Giants were slated to go on the clock, Beckham posted a photo on his Instagram account from the moment he was chosen in 2014. The Giants truly seem to believe Manning has a little magic left in his right arm, and that now he has an array of dazzling weapons, including a hopefully healthy Odell Beckham, Jr.

Really, as a player, he is as no-risk as they come.

The selection came as a surprise to some who believed beyond a shadow of a doubt the Giants would take a quarterback, but ultimately, it all boiled down to Hall of Fame potential. "At the end of the day, a great player is a great player".

Furthermore, unlike quarterbacks, elite running backs can be found well past the first round. "No matter when backs were drafted, they posted pretty similar numbers in terms of yards per carry and rushing Defense-Adjusted Value Over Average". There's lots of trade talk, too, with clubs such as Miami, Buffalo and Arizona eager to climb high enough to run in the derby for Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield. The veteran quarterback will turn 38 in December and has two years remaining on his contract. Barkley's built like them but doesn't necessarily run like them.
