ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Thursday that National Basketball Association sources told him that Kyrie Irving has now been told he will miss the rest of the 2017-18 National Basketball Association season - including the playoffs and postseason run.Beat reported Adam Kaufman added that the Celtics believe that Kyrie will end up needing another surgery on his knee.
However, the team said that during that procedure a bacterial infection was discovered where Irving had two screws inserted into his patella to fix a fracture suffered during the 2015 NBA Finals.
The Boston Celtics (53-25) have four games left in the 2017-18 season and face the Chicago Bulls (27-51) next on Friday evening.
"The fracture in Irving's patella has completely healed, and his knee remains structurally sound", the Celtics said in a statement.
Kyrie Irving offered some perspective Thursday on the devastating revelation that he will need to undergo a second knee procedure and miss the entire playoffs.
The task of filling the enormous chasm left by Irving falls to Terry Rozier, who has impressed since taking over the starting PG role, but clearly lacks the dynamic offensive talent and championship experience of his All Star teammate.
The Celtics (53-25) are locked into the second seed in the conference and would now face a first round series against John Wall and the revitalised Wizards.
Boston will be entering the postseason minus the backcourt of Irving and Gordon Hayward, who suffered a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia against Cleveland on opening night. "To ensure that no infection remains in the knee, the screws will be removed". Trust Me. "The journey back to the top of Mt. Everest continues". Now they will have to go through the playoffs without Kyrie Irving. He will miss 4-to-5 months, per the team.
It's disappointing that Boston's admirable and astonishing run through some ridiculous adversity is going to come an end sooner than anyone had hoped, but they've fought through just about everything that could have been thrown at them. Maybe Marcus Smart would return as well, and Boston would again have a punchers-chance against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors for a trip to the Finals.
Irving was expected to return at some point around the first round after a minor procedure on March 24, with the initial timeline set at 3-6 weeks.
