The campaign to write Ambedkar's name in the correct way was initiated by Governor Ram Naik in December 2017, citing the manner in which Ambedkar signed on the pages of the Constitution.

The police reports stated that some unidentified miscreants on Saturday damaged a statue of De BR Ambedkar in Allahabad's Jhunsi. The statue is being replaced and a case has been lodged against unidentified persons, Superintendent of Police Dr Dharamvir said, according to news agency PTI.

Local BSP and SP leaders and supporters gathered at the park staging a protest, demanding the culprits be arrested. "The present government can only intimidate and harass us through investigative agencies", Akhilesh said.

An FIR was registered against Yadav and several Samajwadi Party workers in this connection later.

The incident most likely happened in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

Phulpur MP from Samajwadi Party Nagendra Patel also demanded that the security of the statue be ensured in future.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that stern action will be taken against the miscreants who vandalised the statues.

A few days ago In the row of Statue vandalism, an unknown person targeted statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai in Gandhinagar's Shertha Gujarat as reported by ANI. "Unlawful elements keep doing this to the mahapurush of the Dalits, it is a shame". Earlier, a similar incident had taken place in Meerut on March 7.

Dalit groups last week lashed out at the UP government for trying to "appropriate" Ambedkar's name while reminding the saffron party that Ambedkar had in fact shunned Hinduism because of the divisive caste system.

It all started when Tripura BJP leaders destroyed a statue of Lenin after the party won elections in the North-Eastern state. Also, a life-size statue of Michael Madhusudan Dutt, a prominent poet during the 19th century Bengal renaissance, was found defaced in Raniganj of West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman district.
