Trump offered Putin a White House meeting, Kremlin says

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that the White House was among "a number of potential venues" Putin and Trump discussed during a March 20 telephone conversation.

"Trump proposed holding a meeting at the White House in Washington", said Mr. Putin's top foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov.

In calling Putin, Trump ignored explicit advice from his national security advisers not to do so, The Washington Post has reported, quoting officials familiar with the call.

Tension on the Korean Peninsula has thawed in recent months with Seoul and Pyongyang agreeing to hold a summit on April 27, the first meeting between the leaders of the two sides in 11 years. She says the administration has no further comment on the matter.

Shortly after the March 20 call, Trump told reporters he likely would meet Putin soon to talk about a range of issues - but his list of possible discussion topics did not include the Kremlin's efforts to tinker with US elections and the former spy's poisoning. Kurt Volker, U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine, informed about the preparation to the meeting.

The Kremlin has been signaling it wants a high-profile summit between Putin and Trump, likely focused around arms control.

Trump signed off on a USA plan to expel 60 Russian diplomats and intelligence operatives and to close a Russian consulate in Seattle in retaliation for a poison attack on an ex-Russian spy and his daughter.

Donald Trump bored hundreds of young guests by launching into a politically charged rant as he attended the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. "It was supposed to be very rainy and nasty and cold and windy", said Trump, who appeared in an overcoat on the balcony with his wife and the Easter Bunny.

The President also appeared agitated after the roll when questioned by a reported about DACA, an Obama scheme aimed at protecting children living illegally in the USA from deportation. "PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH!" Trump tweeted the day after his call with Putin.

"Against the background of these events, of course, it is hard to discuss holding a summit", said Ushakov, according to TASS.
