Companies in Britain are now required by law to publicly share their salary information with the hope that, by losing the ability to hide any gender pay gaps, the disparities will begin to lessen and, eventually, disappear. This date symbolizes how many more days women must work to earn the same as their male colleagues did in 2017. The color signifies how far "in the red" women are with their pay. The narrowest gender wage gap exists in NY and DE, where women earn 89% of the median salary for men. According to research by the American Association of University Women, for every $1 paid to white men, Hispanic women eared 54 cents, African American women earned 63 cents, white women earned 79 cents and Asian American women earned 87 cents.

Visier's VP of marketing tells Forbes the real wage gap opens up around ages 32 to 40, when women are more likely to have young kids at home: "Women tend to take on more of the childcare responsibilities and that impacts their earning potential", she says. Wyoming has the largest gap between men and women at 36 percent with NY and DE taking the top spots at 11 percent.
