Sunday morning SNL released a video on their YouTube channel poking fun of the Cleveland Cavaliers, one they said was cut for time constraints. But as protests, police clashes and chaos ensue in the background, he continues to sing oblivious to his environment. The message seems to be about gun violence and civil unrest in the States, although Glover and Murai didn't make their intentions too obvious.
References to Black Lives Matter, the Charlottesville Unite The Right rally, the Charleston church shooting, as well as police shootings, and terrorism abound.
"This is America" premiered after Glover hosted the parody show Saturday Night Live on May 5. "He is saying that is how America distracts the people", the tweet read.
Filmed in a large empty warehouse, the video for "This is America" begins with a shirtless and heavily bearded Gambino dancing in a seemingly upbeat and celebratory mood.
Glover is expected to release a new album in 2018, and it could very well be his last.
Ironically, Glover may have accidentally proven that he's good at SNL monologues in the process as keeping the monologue under five minutes and having it move throughout the studio is always a titanic achievement.
Speculation on Twitter suggests Glover, who also works as an actor and screenwriter, was channelling fictional character Jim Crow, a disabled slave who was used as a negative representation of African Americans towards the end of the 19th Century. Solo: A Star Wars Story will co-star Donald Glover as fan favorite Lando Calrissian, a role originally played by Billy Dee Williams.
