AAA predicts almost 1.3 million Michiganders will be traveling this weekend, with 90 percent of them driving.
Memorial Day weekend is one of the big travel times of the year, but it's also a time when gas prices rise high. "Compared to an average of the last three Memorial Day weekends, pump prices are almost 50 cents more expensive and climbing", said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson. In the same survey, 39 percent said gas prices will affect their summer travel decisions, compared to 19 percent in 2017.
A record number of Americans are traveling this weekend for the Memorial Day holiday. MS is the cheapest place to buy gas in America, with an average price of $2.654 a gallon.
With self-service regular already above $3 per gallon across much of lower Michigan last week, prices south of the Ohio-Michigan border jumped to just shy of that mark this week.
If you want to save every penny on gas, AAA suggests turning off your vehicle and going inside a restaurant, instead of waiting in the drive-thru line. Idaho's prices are higher still - at $3.16, Gem State drivers are paying 11 cents more than a month ago and 61 cents more than a year ago.
Trends are also indicating that this summer is likely to bring the national average to at least $3 per gallon, according to American Automobile Association spokesperson Jeanette Casselano.
"We just go with the flow and go with the gas prices and go on", said Miller.
Almost 220,000 Idahoans will be among them, according to new projections by AAA.
US oil production is on the rise, but it is not compensating for the difference in total demand, McTeague said.
However, the cost of gas during this holiday weekend will be a far cry from 2014 when commuters paid a national average of $3.65 per gallon and close to $4.10 in the county.
"We'll give you a free ride home and take your auto home for you, so you're not endangering yourself and others on the road", Wisconsin AAA's Nick Jarmusz said. Additional maintenance and safety personnel will be patrolling during the holiday weekend.
"The sad fact is that many traffic crashes are preventable, but in order to prevent them we all have to do our part by buckling up, complying with speed limits, eliminating distractions and never driving impaired", said Col. Gary T. Settle, state police superintendent. In Clearwater Beach, Florida, on Thursday, he said Memorial Day provides an incentive to get away and explore new places.
