This year, an "Avengers" comic is available for Free Comic Book Day the weekend after "Avengers: Infinity War" opened in theaters. The holiday, an annual promotional effort by the North American comic book industry, is created to forge a love of reading and art appreciation in young readers and bring business to independently owned comic book stores.
If anyone feels like cosplaying for the day please feel free, as a few actual superheroes bounding around would be sure to make the event even more fun and exciting for the kids. MB Subculture will also have a food vendor, a VHS swap, and a costume contest.
If that landmark gathering of Marvel Comics heroes has you wanting to delve further into their adventures, there's no better time to visit your friendly, neighborhood comic book shop. Come and get one Saturday during the 17th annual Free Comic Book Day event at public libraries on the Big Island and statewide, and at Enjoy Comics in Hilo.
The store is located at 45 Pohaku St., Suite 201, and hours Saturday are 10 a.m. -9 p.m.
Then, from 11:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m., everyone is welcome to take part in Button Making with Comics.
"It brings out people from all over town who may be curious about it and it rewards the die-hard fans who buy comics all the time anyways", Klie said. But comic book shops aren't the only place to celebrate Free Comic Book Day.
"We've done it every year for the last six to 10 years, so it's definitely a favorite".
"I've also personally found them to be a fantastic tool for struggling or reluctant readers", Springer said.
"Children can count reading comic books towards their reading hours for the program", she said.
