Golovkin vs. Martirosyan fight results, highlights: GGG pummels opponent to retain titles

GGG ties Hopkins mark with KO of Martirosyan

Gennady Golovkin, denied Canelo rematch, destroys Martirosyan in two

Gennady Golovkin has plans to clean out the entire middleweight division after defeating Vanes Martirosyan on Saturday night at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California.

That's often how it is with Golovkin, who is now 38-0-1 after scoring his 34th knockout. The outcome was not the least bit surprising.

Defense #21 could be a rematch against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in September. He certainly looked rusty in the ring, although facing GGG will do that to just about anyone.

As a result, Golovkin was forced to find an opponent on short notice and Martirosyan was the only one that a majority of the sanctioning bodies were willing to accept.

Saturday's World Championship Boxing® telecast begins at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

With that, Golovkin strapped on his newly revised, special World Boxing Council Cinco de Mayo-themed belt and told the crowd, "Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone!"

Vanes can pull off the upset if Golovkin is not familiar with his style, it would take the ideal gameplan and boxing IQ to dethrone fighter of Golovkin's caliber.

Besides his joke, Martirosyan had a prediction for how a second Golovkin-Alvarez fight might play out, especially if Alvarez feels the pressure to meet the demanding standards of Mexican boxing fans and go toe-to-toe with Golovkin after being responsible for the fight being scuttled in May.

"This is a sport to him, and the sport is the most important thing", said Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez. It appears that adding the extra pounds did not bother Martirosyan too much but it was clear that his power was one division south of the agreed upon weight tonight. With the win, Golovkin tied Bernard Hopkins' record of 20 successful middleweight title defenses. Gennady Golovkin's rematch with Canelo Alvarez would have settled who the best middleweight boxer was. I would say only about 10 percent that it happens.

Moments after the bout, the 36-year-old said: "I want everyone. It was the hardest I have ever been hit". Unsurprisingly, bookmakers have installed Golovkin as a heavy favourite against the 32-year-old Martirosyan, who has 36 wins in 40 fights including 21 by knockout. However, that was all for naught as Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO's), 27, tested positive for trace amounts of the banned substance clenbuterol in random urine tests conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on February 17 and February 20 in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico.
