Protesters are demanding the right to return to their homes in historical Palestine, from which they were driven in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel.
"I think there is no doubt that the American Embassy should be in Jerusalem, I think all the embassies should be in Jerusalem because Jerusalem is the capital of Israel", says Rena Baba, walking down a busy pedestrian street. Israel says it only opens fire when necessary to stop infiltrations, damage to the fence, and attacks.
"It was really just us, it was our family that was there", she said.
"It was approximately one kilometer long".
Meanwhile, Israel warned that its army will harshly respond and strike on Hamas infrastructure all over the Gaza Strip, in case of masses of demonstrators who try to cut the fence of the border and infiltrate into Israel, according to Israeli media.
The Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Saturday a Gaza border crossing would be closed to fix damage from protesters' arson the night before.
President Trump is expected to address attendees at Monday's event via video link.
It was unclear to some Gaza residents why the demonstrators chose to attack the terminal. The decision, he said, was viewed to be in the best interest of the United States, something Trump had promised during the campaign.
"Some petrol stations have storage for maybe a day or two, so the crisis will begin by Monday or Tuesday should the crossing remained closed", he said. Hamas has organized them mostly against an Israeli-Egyptian blockade in place since Hamas overran Gaza in 2007.
Veteran Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath thinks there's still hope, citing long-term trends he believes favour the Palestinians, including growing disagreements between the Trump administration and traditional U.S. allies, and demographic pressure on Israel as the numbers of Arabs and Jews in the Holy Land approach parity. Egypt also restricts movement in and out of Gaza. No details of the proposal have been confirmed, though Palestinian officials, citing information from Saudi intermediaries, suspect it's an offer for a Gaza-based mini-state with parts of the West Bank and a small foothold in Jerusalem.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday that the United States' decision on Jerusalem has brought the Israeli-Palestinian settlement to a standstill.
Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are in Israel before Monday's grand opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. The embassy will be either gradually expanded on the current premises or a new complex might be built.
