Leaders of Time's Up, #MeToo and other women's rights movements, including some of the women who say Weinstein raped them, are beginning to react.

Weinstein flinched as he heard the description.

The office of Attorney Benjamin Brafman, who is representing Weinstein, said on Thursday that he would not comment on reports of Weinstein's surrender. "We believe that they are not factually supported by the evidence", Brafman said.

"Assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case", he said.

A month ago, comedian Bill Cosby was convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting a onetime friend, one of dozens of women who have accused him of sexual misconduct.

Weinstein's rep released a statement following the publication of the New Yorker expose, denying the accusations against him.

He has until Wednesday to decide whether to testify before a grand jury.

Harvey Weinstein's day of reckoning has come. Asked "what can you say?" he mildly shook his head and softly said "no". He is expecting various criminal sex charges. In another case, involving a woman who has not been named, Weinstein faces charges that include first-degree rape. "I didn't want to kick him or fight him". "This is the first time since written history that women are being believed - begrudgingly, but still".

"This is an emotional moment".

"Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell", the Italian actress wrote on Twitter Friday.

ET can confirm that the 66-year-old former movie mogul turned himself in to police in New York City just before 7:30 a.m. ET.

Weinstein stands accused by more than 70 women of sexual misconduct, including rape, with some of the accusations going back decades. Weinstein must also wear an electronic monitor, surrender his passport and can not travel beyond NY or CT. Joan llluzzi, said as she read the charges in New York Criminal Court.

Until the scandal, Weinstein was among the most influential forces in American film.

Weinstein was forced out of the company he founded after an investigation into his conduct was started in October. Their later company, Weinstein Co., distributed Oscar winners "The Artist" and "The King's Speech".

Weinstein was arraigned on the charges Friday. "The arrest and ensuing charges are the result of a joint investigation between the NYPD and the Manhattan District Attorney's Office", the NYPD said.

In a statement published by the Hollywood Reporter, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said that Friday's charges, "reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation", adding, "I thank the fearless survivors who have come forward, and my office's prosecutors who have worked tirelessly on this investigation".

Weinstein is also under investigation for alleged sex crimes in Los Angeles and London.

Major figures in media and politics have lost their jobs or had their reputations tarnished by allegations that they subjected women to unwanted advances or outright assaults.
