Harvey Weinstein: the remarkable downfall of Hollywood's biggest mogul

Harvey Weinstein turned himself in for arrest in NY on Friday on charges of rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct in cases involving two women. But in response to The New Yorker's reporting, Weinstein issued a statement denying claims of nonconsensual sex. Weinstein surrendered his USA passport and agreed to wear a monitoring device that tracks his location, confining him to the states of NY and CT. He agreed to not leave the New York State or CT without court permission, and has also agreed to wear a Global Positioning System tracking device. Ben Brafman, an attorney for Weinstein, told the Hollywood Reporter that his client will plead not guilty to the charges.

It's been almost eight months since accusations of rape, sex assault and harassment first surfaced against the 66-year-old Weinstein.

Harvey Weinstein has been formally charged with rape and sexual abuse after turning himself in to police in NY.

Weinstein, 66, surrendered Friday at the New York City Police Department's 1st Precinct in Lower Manhattan.

He is expected to be taken to Manhattan Criminal Court later on Friday to be arraigned on the charges, United States media reports. "I thank the courageous survivors who have come forward, and my office's prosecutors who have worked tirelessly on this investigation ..."

"He's not taking responsibility for a single one of these victims", she said in an interview.

NY police have previously confirmed an active Weinstein investigation regarding Evans, who was an aspiring actress at the time, and a credible rape allegation after "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta accused the former producer of raping her twice at her NY apartment in late 2010.

The Time's Up anti-harassment movement - launched on January 1 - said the producer "shattered the lives of an untold number of women", adding that it looked "forward to seeing justice prevail".

"People are so sad, and they are so sick of it", McGowan said of the many other powerful men who have faced sexual misconduct allegations since Weinstein's downfall. "Mr Weinstein did not invent the casting couch in Hollywood".

"Harvey Weinstein shattered the lives of an untold number of women". I think five years from now, a lot of these weeds will be taken out.

In a statement, District Attorney Cy Vance said the charges stem from incidents involving two women in 2013 and 2004, respectively.

Like Weinstein, the accusations against Cosby took decades to surface, in part because of the power of his celebrity and accusers' fear they would not be believed. "In 1997, I was raped by Harvey Weinstein here at Cannes", Argento began during her presentation of the best actress award.

Weinstein's attorney Brafman made a statement claiming that they meant to "move very quickly" to have the charges against Weinstein dismissed.

She said: 'I have to admit seeing Harvey Weinstein in handcuffs is something I never thought I'd see and it feels honestly, really good. It's not hard to imagine that Weinstein, a self-described Hollywood outsider, relates to one of the entertainment industry's one most accomplished and notorious figures.
