He also characterized the rape charges as "absurd" because, "This is an extraordinary case in my judgement where the only rape victim that Mr. Weinstein is accused of raping is someone with whom he has had a 10-year consensual sexual relationship - both before and after the alleged incident".

Prosecutors haven't identified the second accuser, who told investigators Weinstein confined her in a hotel room and raped her.

A grand jury indicted Harvey Weinstein on Wednesday on two counts of rape and a single count of criminal sexual acts.

Weinstein's indictment by a grand jury follows his arrest and court appearance last Friday.

Weinstein has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex, since the bombshell allegations surfaced seven months ago.

The 66-year-old twice-married father of five, was charged with rape in the first and third degrees, stemming from an attack on a woman in 2013, and a criminal sex act against another woman in 2004.

As part of a bail package negotiated in advance, Weinstein put up $1 million in cash and will agreed to wear a monitoring device. He said Weinstein expects to be exonerated if the case goes to trial.

Weinstein wasn't there himself but his lawyer met for almost two hours with prosecutors from the D.A.'s office and Justice James Burke in closed chambers yesterday.

"I also think that pressure that is being brought to bear on the District Attorney's Office - demanding that an indictment or a prosecution of Mr. Weinstein proceed - is inappropriate pressure, it is unprecedented and it troubles me, and I wanted to make those matters known to the court". "All that says is, money buys VIP treatment in the justice system no matter how serious or violent the crimes".

Weinstein faces rape and criminal sex act charges involving two women in NY.

Police set up a sting in which the woman recorded herself confronting Weinstein.

"Today's charges reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation", Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. said in a statement on Friday. Dozens more women have accused him of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to assault in various locales.
