National average gasoline prices are up about 50 cents a gallon from May of previous year, AAA data show.

Despite 88 percent of travelers choosing to drive this Memorial Day, gas prices are the highest they've been during the holiday weekend since 2014.

Local prices at the pump are still 34 cents per gallon below the USA average of $2.86 per gallon and remain the lowest among Tennessee's major metro markets, GasBuddy.com said.

Patrick DeHaan, a petroleum analyst with Gas Buddy, said gas prices cycle every one to one-and-a-half weeks during the spring.

Gas prices throughout Florida averaged $2.82, up almost 10 cents for the week and the highest since November 2014.

Meanwhile, AAA Two Diamond hotels are 7 percent more expensive than last Memorial Day, with an average nightly cost of $151.

AAA says the total Memorial Day travel will rise 4.4 percent from 2017.

"AAA predicts that the national average may reach $3 a gallon this summer, especially if crude oil prices continue to increase", she added.

Today, Mississippi registered the lowest average per-gallon prices in the nation at $2.57; followed by Louisiana, Arkansas and SC, all at $2.58.

On Monday, drivers in Naples were paying an average of $2.81 per gallon, up from $2.74 a week ago but peaked at $2.82 over the weekend. Airfare is down seven percent from last Memorial Day at an average of $168 roundtrip, vehicle rental averages are down 11 percent to $59 per day and three-diamond hotels dropped 14 percent to an average rate of $186 nightly.

That is nearly 5 percent more than 2017, and the most in more than a dozen years.
