"All five are widely respected throughout the game, are all current players who are well known to the players who will be in our team come September, and they also all possess a knowledge and understanding of what to expect from the golf course at Le Golf National too", Bjorn said.

Westwood said: "I am honoured to have been selected by Thomas to be one of what I think is a pretty impressive quintet of vice captains".

"I am delighted to have been asked to be part of Thomas' team of Vice Captains", he said. I'm focusing on can I see us winning with the players that we have?

'Playing in a Ryder Cup is very special.

"We all know the teams are so well balanced these days that the captain can make all the difference, and he needs all the support he can get. You know, just excited to take on a slightly different view of things, and obviously help the 12 players be as ready as they possibly can to regain this trophy that we all care so much about". McDowell, who claimed the winning point for Europe at Celtic Manor in 2010, and Donald will be making their vice-captain debuts.

Bjorn's opposite number Jim Furyk has named Davis Love, Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker as assistants, although Woods has stated his intention to play on the team as well. "We are going to have a special team".

Bjorn also shrugged off the status of Jim Furyk's US team as odds-on favourites to retain the trophy in Paris which they won rather comfortably at Hazeltine two years ago.

"My four Ryder Cup appearances have been the greatest experiences so far of my career", McDowell said. But on Tuesday, the Dane proved the riches he has at it his disposal as Europe Ryder Cup captain by summoning two major winners and two former world No 1s into his backroom staff.
