Movie producer Weinstein charged with rape, sex abuse against two women

Evans' allegations added to those of dozens of other women, who claimed that Weinstein had engaged in a vast range of sexual misconduct dating back almost four decades, ranging from inappropriate touching to incidents of rape.

The accusations, first reported a year ago by the New York Times and the New Yorker, gave rise to the #MeToo movement, in which hundreds of women have publicly accused powerful men in business, government and entertainment of sexual misconduct.

Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said to reporters that he plans to plead not guilty - and his legal team will fight to dismiss the charges.

The felony charges concern "forcible sexual acts against two women in 2013 and 2004, respectively", the Manhattan District Attorney's Office announced Friday.

The former mogul - once the toast of Hollywood and whose films won scores of Oscars - grinned as he was escorted into a Manhattan court in handcuffs to face the first criminal charges posted against him.

Weinstein denies any non-consensual sex and has reportedly been in treatment for sex addiction. "I was 21 years old".

More than 75 women have made allegations against Weinstein, including (from top row left) Asia Argento, Rosanna Arquette, Jessica Barth, Cara Delevingne, Romola Garai, Judith Godreche, Heather Graham, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, Lea Seydoux and Mira Sorvino. The former Hollywood mogul agreed to post a $1 million cash bail, wear an electronic ankle monitor, and not travel beyond NY state and CT.

Earlier this week, Harvey Weinstein's lawyer said federal prosecutors had launched a criminal investigation into the film producer, in addition to a previously disclosed probe by the Manhattan District Attorney. McGowan was one of Weinstein's earliest accusers.

The charges stem from encounters with two of the dozens of women - some famous, some not - who have accused him of sexual misdeeds. "I won't do it again".

"The empathy that's going out to the men who have been swept up in this movement, could you give a minute's thought to what their behavior has done to the women that they have come after!?"

"Mr. Weinstein will enter a plea of not guilty", Brafman told reporters, adding that his client "has always maintained that any sexual activity he engaged in was consensual".

She was among the first women to speak out about the producer and has confirmed to The New Yorker to be pressing charges.

"We got you, Harvey Weinstein, we got you", McGowan tweeted during Weinstein's arraignment.

"You sorry, Harvey?" came a shout from a throng of media as the once powerful movie mogul walked into a lower Manhattan courthouse, his head bowed with the cuffs behind his back.

The Dresden Dolls, Palmer's two-person band, have for years dazzled critics and consumers of high-brow indie rock with incisive, often satirical lyrics and her powerful vocal performances.

"If I'm allowed to, I will attend", McGowan told the AP.

The district attorney and police have been investigating Weinstein for months, under growing calls from the Time's Up movement and Hollywood actresses to bring the disgraced producer to justice.

London's Metropolitan Police have said they are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Weinstein, while prosecutors in Los Angeles said in February they were reviewing three accusations of sexual assault against him.
