NY attorney general resigns after 4 women allege physical attacks

John Kingston, one of three candidates seeking the Republican nomination to run against Warren in the fall, called on Warren to distance herself from Schneiderman, who co-hosted a fund-raising dinner in New York City for Warren in October 2011 during her first campaign.

Schneiderman's announcement late Monday came hours after The New Yorker published the accounts of four women, who accused the Democrat of physical violence.

As a NY state senator, Schneiderman led the push to oust Hiram Monserrate, a fellow Democrat convicted of misdemeanor assault against his girlfriend.

"I have tremendous accolades for the women who came forward".

The claims against Schneiderman, a champion of the Me Too movement and outspoken warrior against sexual harassment and abuse, include violent abuse.

Solicitor General Barbara D. Underwood was named acting-Attorney General on Tuesday.

But, he added, "while these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office's work at this critical time".

Alicandro announced his candidacy on Monday, just hours before the news about Schneiderman broke. They said that they required medical treatment after being slapped across the face and choked.

The allegations were stunning, given Schneiderman's record of advocating for women, including pursuing a case against movie producer Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused of repeated assaults and attacks on women. "I could not remain silent and encourage other women to be courageous for me", Ms Manning Barish wrote on Twitter after the story was published.

"If you've got somebody who's pressing their hands around somebody's neck and she's screaming and he's pressing harder, you don't need much more evidence if you've got those facts in front of you", Gershman said.

A fourth woman alleges Schneiderman slapped her when she rebuffed him and asked to remain anonymous. "So I see no immediate rush because it's not as if the attorney general's office is rudderless in the meantime, it's not".

New York Attorney GeneralEric Schneiderman at a press conference. In 2010, as a state senator in NY, he spearheaded a bill to make intentional strangulation and suffocation into unconsciousness a violent felony, garnering praise and support from domestic violence victims and law enforcement agencies.

They said they had been romantically involved with Schneiderman and the violence was nonconsensual.

Schneiderman's office released a statement from his former wife, Jennifer Cunningham, who said she had known him "for almost 35 years as a husband, father and friend".

Underwood issued a statement saying she is honored to serve and the office's work will continue uninterrupted.

He then made a decision to go into the claim that Schneiderman wears eyeliner, and when one man wrote that the Attorney Ageneral always seemed off his rocker, Don Jr asked: 'Was it the excessive use of eyeliner that gave it away?

ANDREW CUOMO: What they were expressing was a fear that there would be no justice because he was the attorney general.
