Iqbal was returning to his auto after a public meeting in Narowal district when the attacker shot at him from a close range.

Senior police officer Imran Kishwar stated the attacker was instantly arrested, and that the inside minister was out of hazard.

The Punjab province government tweeted that "one of the shooters" is being interrogated by the police, and that Sharif had sought a report from the province's inspector general of police.

They questioned the security arrangements at the public meeting where the minister attacked, asking the police high-up to ensure foolproof security for political, especially during public meetings.

Ahsan Iqbal, 59, was shot in the right shoulder after he addressed a crowd in the town of Narowal. Punjab health secretary Najam Shah said he had been taken to a hospital in Lahore.

Police said a bullet hit the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader in his arm and the suspect has been arrested, Dawn reported.

The party calls for the aggressive enforcement of Pakistan's blasphemy laws, which can carry the death penalty. He has two portfolios, including minister of interior and minister of planning, development and reform.

"We are not sure whether it has got anything to do with the motive".

"Ahsan Iqbal was targeted and shot in the arm", Asim Khan, a special aide to the politician, told AFP. The suspect then claimed that he committed the act because he was upset with the PML-N government over the change to the offending clause in the Constitution. The shooting, which took place in Punjab Province, left Pakistanis on edge as the country prepares to hold general elections as early as July.
