Meanwhile, the rupee edged one paisa higher to 62.63 against the US dollar in early trade today after the greenback weakened overseas ahead of monthly US jobs report and China-US trade meet outcome.
While the Sensex fell 187 points or 0.53% at 34,915 level, the Nifty closed 61 points or 0.57% lower at 10,618.
The Sensex touched a high of 35,257.31 points and a low of 35,020.08 during the intra-day trade.
The Nifty50 closed at 10,718.05 points - down 21.30 points or 0.2 per cent from the previous close, while, the Sensex closed at 35,176.42 points, up 16.06 points or 0.05 per cent. The Bankex was down 0.13 per cent but the Finance Index was up 0.01 per cent.
On the NSE, the top gainers were Sun Pharma, Bharti Infratel and Tata Steel.
Provisional data with the exchanges showed that foreign institutional investors sold scrips worth Rs 148.42 crore, and the domestic institutional investors sold stocks worth Rs 578.92 crore.
"Mixed earnings from corporates and valuation concerns compared to other emerging markets influenced investors to book some profit", said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.
Adani Ports (+2.3%), GAIL (+2%), ONGC (+1.2%), BPCL (+1.1%) and HCL tech (+1%) were the top gainers on Nifty50.
A similar trend was witnessed in the broader markets as investors pared their portfolios, pulling down the mid-cap index by 0.35 per cent and the small-cap by 0.25 per cent.
The BSE Midcap was marginally down by 0.30% and the BSE Smallcap indices were down 0.06%.
Shares of Godrej Properties zoomed 3% after the company reported its net profit stood at Rs141.5cr, increased by 126% on yoy basis.
