Three injured shooter detained at middle school in Indiana

An Indiana middle school student has been taken into custody after allegedly opening fire on schoolmates Friday, officials said.

A student has corroborated the claim that the Noblesville West Middle School shooter in IN was stopped in his tracks by a science teacher, according to CBS 4.

Vice President Mike Pence, who is from IN, said on Twitter he and his wife, Karen, are "praying for the victims of the bad shooting".

The teacher and student victims were shot in that room, Jowitt said, adding that the situation was resolved quickly and the suspect was taken into custody.

An adult and a teenager were injured in the Noblesville West Middle School shooting. "And me and (another student) were standing there, so we grabbed a bunch of desks and chairs and threw them over at the door to barricade it so nobody could get in".

Chad Lancaster, who has an eighth-grade daughter and sixth-grade son at the middle school, said he heard about the shooting from his ex-wife in a phone call.

Jowitt said the first call came at 9:06 a.m., and multiple local agencies responded.

The suspect is believed to have acted alone, spokesman Bryant Orem of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office told the AP.

One victim is a teenage girl. The station reported the teacher was shot while attempting to intervene in the shooting.

Vice President Mike Pence offered his support in a tweet complete with a message that's become commonplace in the wake of school shootings. "We have not received any information that this has been anything other than a communicated threat", Jowitt said. "There is a male student" from the middle school who has been detained as the shooter.

Barnes said investigators would remain inside the school for several hours and that because of the quick response, "We think lives were saved today".

"I just want to get my arms around my boy", she said.

Students were being transported from the middle school to Noblesville High School, FOX 59 reported. The last day of this school year is in one week, June 1.

"We didn't know what was going on", the freshman said, but she was relieved when she learned it was only a bomb threat at the high school. A student asked for permission to leave the classroom and "he returned armed with two handguns", Jowitt said at an afternoon news conference.

The school is now on lockdown.

The shooting comes a week after 10 people were killed at a school in Santa Fe, Texas.

Police, fire and school officials did not immediately return HuffPost's requests for comment.
