Uber unveils flying taxis for 'regular people'

The proposed rotor system would be the first to use stacked co-rotating rotors or propellers

As part of the deal, Uber will share its data with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to move the world closer to developing air traffic management systems for flying cars and air taxis. This drone-looking invention is a VTOL, or electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing vehicle. "Alphabet CEO Larry Page has made significant investments in companies working on flying cars, such as startups Kitty Hawk" Kitty Hawk and Zee Aero.

"The eCRM design is pedestrian friendly, as the propeller blades are as high as possible, leaving ample room for individuals to board and deplane without having to duck", Uber's statement read, according to Fortune.

Uber will be ready to start commercial service with urban air taxis by 2023, Mark Moore, Uber Elevate's engineering director, said at the Elevate Summit on Tuesday. Flying speed will be between 150 miles per hour and 200 miles per hour while flying from 1,000 to 2,000 feet above the ground. "Finally, point of entry into the eCRMs is limited to one side, simplifying ground crew operations and reducing confusion for riders when they approach their eVTOL vehicle". Initial flights will have human pilots, but Uber Elevate's grand plan envisions pilotless light planes winging passengers from pickup to destination.

Officials tell CNBC that they'll fly 1,000 to 2,000 feet above ground and be quieter than a traditional helicopter. Analysis of these simulations will identify safety issues as these new aircraft take to the air in an already crowded air traffic control system.

Uber has been working on a flying vehicle concept for quite some time.

NASA and Uber have signed an agreement to explore putting flying taxis in the skies over USA cities. The company believes that with drone technology advancing and urban transportation not the easiest for travelers to overcome, taking to the air is a reasonable solution. Embraer X is engaged in several projects, including the development of eVTOL concepts through a cooperation with Uber and other companies to explore business opportunities within the Uber Elevate ecosystem.
