Former LSU star Ben Simmons named NBA Rookie of the Year

The 76ers are led by Australian point guard and 2018 Rookie of the Year Ben Simmons and their head coach Brett Brown, a former coach of the Australian national men's team. The award has previously been won by the likes of Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Vince Carter, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O'Neal, Larry Bird, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, and Michael Jordan.

"I'd like to thank my family and friends to start with".

"NBA rosters are still fresh at that point so they're still figuring each other out so I think there will be a few opportunities and hopefully we can put ourselves on the map with a win". It's the second straight year the Australian league will send teams for games.

Ben Simmons is congratulated after receiving his Rookie of the Year award.

Mitchell emerged as the steal of the 2017 draft. Mitchell even arrived to Monday's awards show in a van that underscored his point. Most notable of those was the sweatshirt Mitchell wore to a game with the definition of the word "rookie" on the front.

When Simmons was announced the victor Mitchell got out of his seat and hugged the Australian.

Following last year's pre-season National Basketball Association hit out, seeing the Sydney Kings, Brisbane Bullets and Melbourne United face some of the biggest sides out of the USA, the Kiwi side are the latest to join the party, taking on the Suns at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix in October.

"I try not to let the media hype things up or fans or whatever it is just because I know I'm doing what I love and I do what I can on the floor", said Simmons, when asked about the criticism. "That doesn't take anything away from Jayson or Donovan from having an excellent season".

Simmons, meanwhile, was exposed in the playoffs by the Celtics for his inability to make mid-range and three-point shots.
