Trump is set to meet with Kim in Singapore on Tuesday in what will be the first meeting between a sitting USA president and North Korean leader in history.
That was met with retaliatory levies from its closest allies, which have raised fears of a trade war and prompted complaints to be filed with the World Trade Organisation.
"Tariffs imposed last week by President Trump on European Union and Canada have increased significantly tensions before the meeting", a senior European Union official said, adding that a breakthrough to ease trade tensions was unlikely.
