The NYPD confirmed to ET that Kate, 55, was found dead in her Manhattan apartment on Tuesday and her body was discovered by an individual who was employed by her. I even said I (would) go with her and be a "patient" too (she liked that idea) I said we could talk about it all - our childhood, etc. This is not your fault.
Spade, who's survived by her husband Andy and 13-year-old daughter Frances, also was memorialized by another famous family member, brother-in-law David Spade. After multiple attempts to help her sister Saffo said she finally "let go", adding, "sometimes you simply can not SAVE people from themselves!" "So pretty. I dont (sic) think everyone knew how f-ing amusing she was". "She was always a very excitable little girl and I felt all the stress/pressure of her brand may have flipped the switch where she eventually became full-on manic depressive".
Anna Wintour praised the late designer, saying in a statement, "Kate Spade had an enviable gift for understanding exactly what women the world over wanted to carry". "She was also a staple of NYC who spread goodwill".
Spade was a former accessories editor at the now-closed Mademoiselle magazine before launching her namesake design company, Kate Spade New York, in 1993. "Kate really removed herself from society, from NY, from the fashion world, and she really just focused, I think, on being a mom".
Police said she may have taken her own life because of money and marital problems.
"I don't mind being associated with the fact that we started it, that we were the founders", she said. "Everyone loves to get a letter", Spade told the AP in 2006, explaining that she never used computers and had her staff print out emails.
Spade and her husband, Andy, had been married for 24 years.
Saffo told CBS This Morning she "tried numerous times to get her help".
She and her husband Andy built a fashion empire around her signature handbags.
The designer was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and created her own line of handbags in the 1990s and then introduced both jewellery and clothing.
