'Ant-Man and the Wasp' marks Marvel's 20th straight No. 1 opening

Ant-Man and the Wasp will hit Indian screens on July 13.

Ant-Man and the Wasp's first trailer showed us a glimpse of the partnership between Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) - also known as Ant-Man and the Wasp.

The flick opened Thursday with $11.5 million - almost double that of the first movie - but its Friday, Saturday and Sunday numbers didn't hold as high, which basically means a lot of the hard core fans went to see it Thursday night. That start is significantly ahead of the original "Ant-Man", which debuted with $57 million in 2015.

I haven't seen it myself, TBH, and I haven't heard anything about it from my "non-geeky" friends (i.e. nothing on my personal social media); so I think everybody has been outside enjoying the sunshine and involved with other activities. Across 20 films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought in US$17 billion globally. Overseas, the movie made $85 million, bringing its worldwide total to $161 million. Ant-Man and the Wasp received a "A-"CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences, just a notch down from the "A" for Ant-Man, and 55% of the overall audience was male while 58% of the overall audience was over the age of 25". The blockbusters earned US$29 million and US$28.6 million respectively this weekend. The most recent iteration was 2016's The Purge: Election Year, which ended its theatrical run with US$79 million domestically and US$118.5 million worldwide. Granted, advances in technology, manufacturing, and materials sciences have allowed supercomputers and their components to get smaller and smaller (you probably have one in your pocket, purse, or hand right now), which in turn allows the things that rely on them to get smaller still, but we're still in the realm of fiction when it comes to taking a Fantastic Voyage. In three weeks, the dinosaur tentpole has earned $333.3 million in North America. Everyone's favorite crime-fighting family has crossed the $500 million mark domestically and $700 million worldwide. Finally, Deadpool 2 took the 10th spot this weekend with an additional $1.6 million, bringing the grand total to $727.7 million globally. Lakeith Stanfield, Armie Hammer, Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun, Danny Glover, Terry Crews, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, and Omari Hardwick round out the cast. So far, Incredibles 2 has made $773 million at the worldwide box office.

Another documentary, Neon's "Three Identical Strangers" earned $717,008 million from 5 locations, bringing its domestic tally past $1 million.

The 2018 box office, which just hit US$6.5 billion, is up 9 per cent from past year, according to ComScore.
