Of course, as Top Gun fans all know, Goose met his untimely end in the film, leaving behind a grieving Maverick, played by Tom Cruise. His young son has now grown up in the second installment, and Teller will be starring alongside Cruise and Val Kilmer in the sequel. Glen Powell (Hidden Figures) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Apocalypse) also tested for the same role.
Top Gun: Maverick is set to soar into theaters on July 12, 2019.
Powell joked about losing the role to Teller on Twitter.
Actor Glen Powell himself had some light fun over the news, tweeting: "I'm taking down all the Tom Cruise posters in my bedroom".
"It's going to be a competition film like the first one, and it's going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first", he said, with "the need for speed and big, fast machines". So maybe Goose Jr.is a drone operator, one of the aforementioned "fifth generation fighters", or doesn't actually have anything to do with aviation.
Interest in Tom Cruise's long-promised Top Gun sequel, now titled Top Gun: Maverick, ballooned in early June when it was revealed that Val Kilmer would be reprising the role of of Iceman from the original film.
Skydance CEO David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer, producers of the original return to produce the sequel with Cruise.
