Mukesh Ambani unveils broadband plan for India

JioPhone 2 will be available for the consumers with enhanced features.

The plan to launch fibre broadband opens up a new revenue stream for Reliance under its Jio venture. Having made India the largest data consumer in 2017, the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries has now set his sights on putting India among the top five fixed broadband markets in the world.

Mumbai: Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani on Thursday announced the launch of Jio Phone 2. All existing JioPhone users can exchange their JioPhone and upgrade to JioPhone 2 by just paying Rs 501. JioGigaFiber services will also allow TV-to-TV calling within the comfort of homes.

"While India has pole-vaulted into global leadership in the mobile broadband space.we still lag behind significantly in fixed-line broadband".

The fixed-line broadband will offer "ultra-high-definition entertainment on large screen TVs, multi-party video conferencing from your living room, voice-activated virtual assistants, virtual reality gaming, digital shopping, immersive experiences", said Ambani, India's richest man. Unlike the traditional JioPhone, the JioPhone 2 is comparatively bigger and wider, courtesy of a horizontal display employed this time around. Jio has been testing its internet service in a few cities in India for a few months now, but the company seems to be ready finally to launch it officially now.

Jio GigaFiber trials are underway and registrations will start this Independence Day. It is still unclear whether all features that are available for WhatsApp and YouTube users on Android and iOS will make it to Jio Phone or not.

Jio subscriber base was at 186.6 million, as on March 2018. The effort will involve the group's Reliance Retail Ltd and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd businesses, he said.

"We have more than 25 million JioPhone users in India", Ambani told shareholders. Starting August 15, you can register your interest in the JioGigaFiber. These routers are able to offer download and upload speeds at Gbps. Dubbed as JioGigaFiber, the broadband connectivity will be extended to homes, merchants, small and medium enterprises and large enterprises. The company said it expects tens of millions of customers and retailers to be a part of this platform through Jio apps as well as Reliance's own retail ecosystem.

Jio GigaTV will let users call other GigaTV users, as well as mobile users on other cellular networks.

JioGigaFiber will offer smart home solutions such as real-time surveillance and security solutions for homes and enterprises.
