Sen. John McCain is joined by wife, Cindy, at the Heard Museum in Phoenix in November 2016.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years", it said.

November 2, 1982: Upon leaving the military, McCain, recently remarried after divorcing his first wife, is elected to an Arizona seat in the US House of Representatives. McCain had earlier survived multiple bouts of skin cancer.

After winning the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, McCain lost the popular vote to Democrat Barack Obama, 53 percent to 46 percent.

He later returned to work.

"Senator McCain told us his grandfather served in the Philippines during the American Occupation and the Second World War while his father, who became a Navy admiral, also saw action in the Philippines and was a recipient of our Legion of Honor", Cayetano recalled.

The son and grandson of U.S. Navy admirals, McCain endured nearly six years of torture and captivity in a North Vietnam prison after his plane was shot down in 1967 on a mission during the long U.S. war.

McCain ran twice for President. "I have often observed that I am the luckiest person on earth".

McCain would have turned 82 next week.

Former Senate colleague Barbara Mikulski remembers the late John McCain as a straight shooter, a courageous legislator, a patriot, a friend, and-despite their political differences-a staunch ally on issues important to them both. "Our hearts and prayers are with you", he said in a post to Twitter.

When Republicans took control of the Senate in 2015, McCain embraced his new influence as chairman of the Armed Services Committee, pushing for aggressive USA military intervention overseas and eager to contribute to "defeating the forces of radical Islam that want to destroy America".

Talk show hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Ellen DeGeneres paid tribute and shared memories of their experiences with the Arizona Senator while Stephen King and Ron Perlman took the time to honor the war hero and take jabs at Trump. He was severely injured and spent more than five years as a prisoner of war.

McCain remained popular throughout his political career, even though he clashed with President Donald Trump in recent years.

MacKay said this year at the International Security Forum in Halifax they'll mark the 10 anniversary of the event by starting an award honouring international courage and leadership, named in John McCain's honour. McCain later said he regretted picking Palin. The six-time Arizona senator was diagnosed with an aggressive tumor called a glioblastoma in 2017 after which he underwent a surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain.

McCain sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2000 but lost out to George W. Bush. In the politics of the moment and in national political debate over the decades, McCain energetically advanced his ideas and punched back hard at critics - Trump not least among them.
