Establishment choice Rep. Martha McSally fended off challenges from two conservative insurgents to become the Republican nominee to fill retiring Sen. If she's victorious, Democrats could pick up an Arizona Senate seat for the first time since Dennis DiConcini left office in 1995.
McSally is favored because she has the support of the party establishment and their donors - she outspent her opponents 10-1 on the airwaves - and because opposition to her on the right is split between two insurgent candidates, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former State Senator Kelli Ward.
All three Republicans had distanced themselves from McCain, who frequently feuded with Trump, and Ward suggested that his family's announcement on Friday that he was stopping medical treatment was timed to hurt her campaign. Ward and Arpaio attacked McSally for her evolution from Trump critic to ardent supporter.
McSally will now face U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema in November. But 2018 would be a disastrous year for the GOP to end the streak, with partisan control of the Senate likely to hang in the balance. Sinema announced that she was pausing her campaign Wednesday and Thursday, when McCain's body will lie in Arizona's Capitol. The Republican runoff between Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp had been close - until Trump endorsed Kemp. Gov. Doug Ducey will be naming someone for McCain's seat.
The last time Florida Democrats won the state's governorship was in 1994. "This is going to be a hard-fought general election".
Another openly LGBT candidate won her primary bid Tuesday night for a seat in Congress, bringing to 12 the number of LGBT candidates for the U.S. House this year.
Arizona is holding primary elections for retiring Sen. On the Republican side, the endorsement from the Miami Herald could propel former Doral councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, who claims to have been abducted by aliens, to a stronger-than expected finish as she and several other Republicans try to catch front-runner Maria Elvira Salazar, a former TV reporter. A united Democratic Party in Florida is vital to break the nearly two decades-long GOP rule in Tallahassee, and with at least seven Republican-held congressional districts at play to flip, control of Congress may hinge on it as well.
Florida also has a pair of marquee statewide races that will be closely watched for signs of how the state might swing in the 2020 presidential election. Graham's daughter, former Rep. Gwen Graham, is on the ballot this year and has been polling favorably leading up to the primary.
Trump has waded into Florida's hotly contested Republican gubernatorial primary, endorsing conservative US Representative Ron DeSantis over Adam Putnam, the state agriculture commissioner and a former US congressman. Cornett is running on his government experience, while Stitt has campaigned as the outsider, self-funding his campaign and hitting Cornett for not supporting Trump enough.
Democrats already have nominated Drew Edmondson, a former state attorney general, and national Democrats believe he has the profile to wage a competitive race against Stitt.
