13 injured and 2 missing as boats collide on Colorado River

4 missing after Colorado River boat collision

Six other people suffered moderate, non-life threatening injuries and six more had injuries considered minor, the fire district said.

The recreational boats - one carrying 10 people and another with six people on board-collided Saturday in Moabi Regional Park as darkness was falling on a rushing river crowded with holiday weekend boaters, making the rescue operation hard. Ten people were injured, with one in critical condition, authorities said. Lewis is the first victim identified Monday after two boats collided on head-on and sank, leaving 13 injured and three missing.

A woman's body was found in the Colorado River more than a day after two boats crashed, investigators said.

Cops say the river may be closed intermittently near the crash site as searches continue to take place.

Divers with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department are brought back to the Topoc Marina on the Colorado River while searching for three people still missing from a boat collision Saturday night on the River. Rescuers had to call off the search for the missing until Sunday morning because it was too unsafe to put divers in the flowing water after dark.

The accident happened nearly 300 miles east of Los Angeles along part of the river that runs along the border of California and Arizona.

Other recreational boaters in the area helped pull victims from the water.

"Top water and shoreline searches have been conducted and continue to be conducted this point, in addition to dive operations that have been underway for several hours", he told reporters during a Sunday afternoon press conference. The river's water can range from shallow to nine metres deep.

According to the LA Times, all 16 people were throw into the "fast-moving" river as the boats sank.

Sonar of the submerged boat did not show signs of the missing persons on board.

Around 7:30 a.m. Monday, authorities found the body of 51-year-old Christine Lewis from Visalia, California, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.
